WHO ARE THEY …………
Who Are They?
Wyrick Edge — Journaling on the Edge
“You know what they say…”
I was thinking about those words when I had to stop and ask myself…
Who are they?
We hear it so often, and sometimes we say it ourselves without giving it much thought.
They say this is appropriate.
They say that’s inappropriate.
They say you should be doing this by now.
They say you’re too old to do that.
Even something as silly as wearing white after Labor Day.
Who decided that????
And why have we repeated it like it’s a rule we’re supposed to live by?
And the list goes on.
But truly, in the end… who are they?🤔
Who decided there was an age when we should stop dreaming? Or that starting over meant we had failed? Who decided what our lives should look like—and when?
I think about how often we let those words get in our heads, sometimes enough to make us question something that felt right in our hearts.💕
We start wondering what people will think, what they might say, and whether they’ll understand.
I’ve done it too—and sometimes I still do.
I’ve questioned myself, held back, and given someone else’s possible opinion more thought than my own feelings.
Sometimes I couldn’t even tell you whose opinion I was worried about. Just… they.
That’s what made me stop and think.
Have I been listening to someone I respect—someone who knows me and cares about me? Or am I carrying around a rule I’ve heard all my life without ever asking whether I believe it?
Of course, I want to be kind and consider other people. My choices matter, and so does how I treat others.
But I have a heart to listen to, too.
There are things I still want to do, things I want to try, and parts of myself I’m still getting to know. I don’t want to miss them because I’m worried about a conversation that may never happen.
Maybe someone will have something to say.
Maybe they won’t understand.
I’m learning that I can live with that, even when it feels uncomfortable.
So the next time I hear, “You know what they say…”
I think I’ll ask.
Who are they?!?!?!
Because I’d like to know who I’ve been giving so much say in my life.
Something to Think About
What is something you’ve been holding back because of what “they” might say?
Have you ever thought about who they might be?
All of my heart
Mary~
