What Was Your Happy Today ………
What Was Your Happy Today?
I like to ask people a question sometimes:
What was your happy today?
Not, “How was your day?” because somehow that question can make us immediately start thinking about everything that went wrong.
The traffic. The bad news. The person who got on our nerves. The thing that didn’t go as planned. The worry we carried around all day.
And those things are real. Some days, they’re really real.
But what if, at the end of the day, we gave just as much attention to what went right?
Maybe your happy was something big. Maybe you got the news you had been hoping for, accomplished something you’ve worked hard for, or spent time with someone you love.
But maybe it wasn’t big at all.
Maybe it was your first sip of coffee in the morning. Maybe it was that song that came on while you were driving, and before you knew it, you were singing at the top of your lungs—completely off-key—and laughing at yourself because you didn’t care. You weren’t singing because you could sing. You were singing because, for that moment, you were happy.
Maybe someone made you laugh. Maybe the sun was shining through the window just right. Maybe a stranger was kind to you. Or maybe it was simply one peaceful moment in an otherwise ordinary day.
Those are the little happies.
And sometimes, they’re the best kind.
I think sometimes we wait for happiness to arrive as this big, unmistakable thing. And while we’re waiting, we overlook all the little happies scattered throughout an ordinary day.
Life will always give us things to worry about. There will always be something that didn’t go quite right.
But there is usually something good there too.
Maybe happiness isn’t always about having a great day.
Maybe sometimes it’s simply about learning to notice the great moments within it.
A Pondering Moment
Before you close your eyes tonight, ask yourself this:
What was my happy today?
And tomorrow, look for it again.
With all my heart,
